NEW - COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan for Travelling Canadians

Effective October 1st 2020, Manulife is excited to offer a new travel insurance policy, called COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan. See benefits below:

  • The coverage includes:
    • Up to CAD 5,000,000 emergency medical coverage unrelated to any travel warning.
    • Up to CAD 200,000 coverage for any expenses related to COVID-19.
    • Interruption benefits for:
      • Quarantine – in the event that the insured is unexpectedly required to quarantine or self-isolate as determined by a medical professional after trip departure, Manulife will pay:
        • Up to $500 for extra cost of a one-way economy class air fare to return to their home if they are delayed beyond the date they were originally scheduled to return home; and/or
        • Up to $150 per day for additional and unplanned commercial hotel and meal expenses to a maximum of 10 days;
        • Up to $300 family coverage maximum, per insured family per day to a maximum of 10 days.
      • Government advisories – in the event that they are in destination and the Government of Canada issues an “AVOID ALL TRAVEL” advisory, Manulife will pay up to a combined maximum of $500 per person for:
        • Their one-way economy class air fare to return to their home; and/or
        • Additional and unplanned commercial hotel and meal expenses.
  • To be eligible for coverage, the insured must:
    • Be a resident of Canada and covered under a government health insurance plan for the entire duration of their trip;
    • Not have been advised by a physician to avoid travel at this time;
    • Not have a terminal illness or metastatic cancer;
    • Not require kidney dialysis;
    • Not have been prescribed or used home oxygen in the last twelve months; and
    • Never have had bone marrow, stem cell or organ transplant (except corneal transplant).
  • Exclusions:
    • Medical: 3 rate categories apply, depending upon qualification:
      • Age 59 & under – 3 month stability prior to the policy’s effective date;
      • Rate category A – 3 month stability prior to the policy's effective date (60 and older);
      • Rate categories B & C – 6 month stability prior to the policy's effective date (60 and older).
    • Interruption
      • Any expenses due to an official travel advisory issued by the Government of Canada stating “Avoid all travel” regarding the country, region or city of your destination, before their departure date.
      • Any expenses they may incur when the insured or their travel companion are denied entry into a country or a region included in their trip when prior to their departure date there were foreign government and/or regional travel guidelines or restrictions in place prohibiting Canadian residents’ entrance due to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
      • Any expenses they may incur at any destination included in their trip, when before their departure date there were foreign government and/or regional travel guidelines or restrictions in place requiring the insured or their travel companion to self-isolate or quarantine for a specific period of time during their trip.
      • Any pre-paid portion of their travel arrangements that are unused.
    • Cruises – 2 specific exclusions as it applies to cruises:
      • Trip interruption – any expenses they may incur:
        • While they are on their cruise; and/or
        • Beyond their original cruise end date due to a positive (COVID-19) test result or contact tracing during their cruise or in any destination included in their cruise itinerary and the insured or their travel companion are required to self-isolate or quarantine.
      • Emergency medical – Any medical condition they may suffer or contract while they are on their cruise or in any destination included in their cruise itinerary.
  • Automatic extensions will be provided beyond the expiry date as stated on the policy should one of the following occur:
    • The common carrier and/or vehicle is delayed and prevents them from travel on their expiry date; an auto-extension of up to 72 hours will apply.
    • If the insured has been advised by a medical professional to self-isolate or be quarantined as a result of COVID-19 beyond their expiry date of coverage, the policy will be extended for the duration of the quarantine and up to 72 hours following the end date of the quarantine period.
    • The insured (or their travel companion) are hospitalized on the expiry date of coverage, policy will be extended for the duration of the hospitalization to a maximum of 365 days or until, in Manulife opinion, they are stable for discharge from the hospital or for evacuation home, whichever is earlier, and for up to 5 days after discharge from the hospital.
    • The insured (or their travel companion) have a medical emergency that does not require hospitalization but prevents them from travelling on their expiry date, as confirmed by a physician. Coverage will be extended for up to 5 days.
  • To stay longer than planned – extensions are permitted providing:
    • The total length of trip outside of Canada, including the extension, does not exceed the maximum allowed by their government health insurance plan.
    • The required additional premium is paid.
    • There has been no event that has resulted or may result in a claim against the policy and no change in their health status.
    • Extension request is made before the expiry date of the existing coverage.
    • No extension of coverage beyond 12 months after the date they first leave home.
  • Refunds: premium refund
    • Refund before departure is permitted.
    • Refund due to early return home is permitted providing:
      • No claim reported or no claim will be submitted;
      • No assistance services have been provided;
      • Proof of early return required;
      • All travellers listed on the confirmation must return together;
      • A minimum premium of CAD 25.00 for unused coverage days of their plan.
